Ep. 21- Immigration with Sarah Heuzen
Tuesday Feb 22, 2022
Tuesday Feb 22, 2022
What is it liking coming to America? Being born here, it's definitely not a feeling I can relate to, uprooting and moving away from everything you've ever known to create a whole brand new life is a powerful testimony of human fortitude.

The roots always make the fruits, looking at our criminal justice system it's important to ask how did our society produce this fruit...Between 70 million and 100 million—or as many as one in three Americans—have some type of criminal record.
In my humble opinion, people are not born bad, they are simply reacting to the environment they exist in...things like poverty, addiction, and mental health play huge roles in why humans resort to crime. If we can start treating these issues we will naturally see a decrease in criminal behavior.
Additionally, if we start treating these "criminals" like humanbeings (rather than statistics and funding sources) we may also chip away at the systems that are designed to keep them in bondage.

Ep. 19- Fostering & Adoption with Ashlee Bitton
Tuesday Feb 08, 2022
Tuesday Feb 08, 2022
There are currently more than 400,000 children in the foster care system, these children are displaced from their families and plopped into the home of a stranger, many times after living a life of neglect and abuse. As a child that was in foster care multiple times, I can tell you that the system is overextended and not able to support the children in the ways necessary for healing.
Today we sit down with a foster family to discuss the challenges with the system and dig into the adoption process. If you have ever contemplated becoming a foster home I would highly encourage you to listen to this episode.

Ep. 18- Neglectful Parents with Ian Misner
Tuesday Feb 01, 2022
Tuesday Feb 01, 2022
1. failing to take proper care in doing something: Negligent parents fail to take proper care of their children.
Negligent parenting can range from uninvolved parenting or a hands-off approach to full-blown neglect of a child's mental/physical/emotional needs and even abuse. No matter where you fall on the spectrum it is likely you have some baggage to unpack around your relationship with your parents.
Once you are able to process that baggage you are able to learn from the sins of your father, quite literally (if your father was neglectful) This becomes a lesson in what-not-to-do as we become parents ourselves.

Ep. 17- Eating Disorders with Caroline Wilcox
Tuesday Jan 25, 2022
Tuesday Jan 25, 2022
I don't know a single person that doesn't have some kind of hang-up over their body. Some people suffer from diagnosed body dysmorphia but many more people suffer from poor body image. For whatever reason, we don't see ourselves in the mirror accurately. As a yoga teacher, I witness this all the time.
While teaching I will give students the queue to separate their feet "hips-width distance". Without fail, many students widen their feet well beyond their hips' actual width, to what I can only guess is their mental idea of what their hips size is.
We are a society that is fixated on body size & shape. We go to extreme measures trying to achieve the "ideal" body. Doesn't even matter that the "ideal" body has changed several times over the years and is a moving target.
Yoyo & fad diets, excessive workout routines, pills or supplements, performance-enhancing drugs, waist trainers & Spanx, injections, full mommy makeovers, and eating disorders are just a few ways we push our bodies towards that mental idea of what our body should look like...even with that, we are just scratching the surface when it comes to our obsession with our body size & shape.
I am not throwing shade at anyone that has had a nip/tuck or saying you can't love yourself if you wear Spanx but hopefully pointing out how common it is to want to change your body. It makes sense then, why so many people have a complicated relationship with food.
Anorexia, bulimia, and binge-eating disorder are the most common eating disorders. Other eating disorders include rumination disorder and avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder. When life gets crazy we desperately look for things we can control and the food we eat is often one of the few things we feel like we can control. Unfortunately without a healthy support system that "control" can quickly spiral into unhealthy habits.
Unhealthy habits left unchecked spiral into much more severe issues. Eating disorders can harm the heart, digestive system, bones, teeth, and mouth, and lead to other diseases.
I am really hoping this week's guest inspires you to look at your relationship with food and your body. Ask yourself 2 questions- 1. Where did these ideas about what my body should look like come from? and 2. Who benefits from me not loving myself?

Ep. 16- Child Drowning with Stephanie Gonzalez
Tuesday Jan 18, 2022
Tuesday Jan 18, 2022
A few episodes ago we had a mother that lost her adult son in a drunk driving collision, this week we sit down with a mother who lost her 11-year-old son to drowning in a low-head dam...both guests said the same thing-
"It was not an "accident".
An accident implies that it was a freak incident but in reality, both guests understand that the loss of their sons was preventable. And just like the first mother I interviewed, this week we sit down with a mother who has become an advocate in preventing any more unnecessary deaths.
Small or low-head dams appear harmless but can be deadly. Research shows more than 440 deaths at such dam sites since the 1950s. BYU researchers say fatalities occur because a strong current pulls objects back toward the dam, pinning them. There are thousands of these small dams throughout the country. Use the link below to see what registered dams may be in your area. Additionally, many dams are unregistered, parents should educate their children about the dangers of dams and not use them as local swimming holes.

Ep. 15- Chronic Illness with Samantha Dalton
Tuesday Jan 11, 2022
Tuesday Jan 11, 2022
It can feel overwhelming when your body doesn't want to perform at its highest levels and when illness sets in keeping you from doing the things you enjoy it's easy to fall into depression. Many people suffer from chronic illness and can relate to the feelings of isolation and grief that wash over you when you realize your body is fighting you.
6 in 10 adults in the US suffer from chronic illness and 4 in 10 suffer from 2 or more. They are also leading drivers of the nation’s $3.8 trillion in annual health care costs
I want to say imagine being sick with cancer but unable to get treatment because you can't afford it, the added stress of the financial burden can compound and delay the healing process. But if you live in the US you don't have to imagine it, many are living it. There has to be a better way we can take care of our communities and our sick.

Compassion by Miller Williams
Have compassion for everyone you meet,
even if they don’t want it. What seems conceit,
bad manners, or cynicism is always a sign
of things no ears have heard, no eyes have seen.
You do not know what wars are going on
down there where the spirit meets the bone.

Ep. 13- Bankruptcy with Jeannette Hitchcock
Tuesday Dec 28, 2021

Financial literacy is the number one skill set NOT taught in schools. Without proper understanding, you can quickly find yourself in a hole that feels impossible to dig out of. Many people not only battle a lack of knowledge around money management but also don't understand it's more complicated than simply how much money you make. One of my favorite quotes around money- Being broke is a temporary financial setback, being poor is a mindset. When I learned this I stopped saying things like "I can't afford that" and instead started saying "that is not a good use of my money" This one small shift in my language allowed me to move from feeling poor to feeling more empowered and wise. This was one of many bad money programming thought patterns I had to unlearn.

Ep. 12- Domestic Violence with Summer Hernandez
Tuesday Dec 21, 2021
Tuesday Dec 21, 2021
I have been very fortunate to run several weeks ahead in the production of these podcasts. All of the episodes are recorded a month or more ahead of posting, and even though we recorded this episode in November there are parts of this story that have replayed in my head and on my heart.
Often women think it won't happen to them until it does. Most times it's gradual and includes emotional manipulation, gaslighting, and deliberate isolation before the victims realize what is going on and by that time...it's too late.
Every 9 seconds in the US a woman is assaulted or beaten and 72% of all murder-suicides involve an intimate partner. These statistics are not only startling but incredibly haunting for many women out there still living with their abusers.
If you are someone in an abusive relationship please take this as your sign to seek help. There are people out there that will help you get out before it gets any worse. You deserve better, whether you believe that or not...believe me.
